Greetings from Indiana Dunes National Park

Before it was a national park, it was my personal playground. I grew up exploring the dunes and interdunal ponds adjacent to my home town on Lake Michigan’s south shore. Thanks to the involvement of my mother and others, especially our neighbor Save the Dunes Council Founder Dorothy Buell, these dunes were preserved as part of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore — in time for me to work there as a park ranger after college. Eventually the national lakeshore became Indiana Dunes National Park. Because of these dunes, wherever I go sand dunes have become a peculiar magnet. White sands, pink sands, singing sands, traveling sands. Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, the Southwest, Cape Cod, Saskatchewan, Australia… I swerve for sand dunes.
