Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

This site preserves the location of the first railroad built over the Allegheny Mountains, which operated between 1834-1854. The direct route between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh played a critical role in opening the interior of the U.S. to trade and settlement.
