It is nearly impossible to choose just one National Park that has made an impression on me. My love of the parks began 60 years ago when I was ten and my parents took our family on a camping trip “out West.” One of my vivid memories of that trip was our time in the Grand Tetons. We attended the evening program, led by a park ranger who taught us a song that was sung to the tune of “Take me out to the ballgame.” My sister and I loved the song, despite (or perhaps because of) the corny lyrics. These lyrics included “Buy me some spurs and a Stetson hat, I don’t care if I ever get back. For it’s root-toot-toot for the Tetons, if you don’t like them you’re sick.” Even my parents were amused by that line. My sister and I broke out in song the rest of our trip, which included at least five more National Parks. There’s no better trip for a family than to drive across the country, visiting National Parks along the way.
Sincerely,
Grand Teton National Park
This spectacular destination preserves a dramatic stretch of the Teton Range bordering the Snake River. One of the unusual features of these distinctive mountains is the absence of foothills, meaning that there are no smaller mountains blocking the view. The park also features glacier-carved lakes, a historic district of weathered buildings made by 19th century Mormon homesteaders, and an abundance of wildlife large and small, including nearly 1,000 bison that roam the grassy fields in herds.
