Greetings from Independence National Historical Park

A couple of years ago, I took my British husband to see the Liberty Bell for the first time. As we walked through the exhibit leading up to the bell, I could see him becoming increasingly moved, as I was, to learn how significant the bell truly is to the nation and to the world. But what proved most powerful of all was what we witnessed when we got to the bell, a simple yet profound moment that really brought it all home for us.

A Park Ranger noticed a young blind man standing near the bell, whose family was describing the bell to him. The Park Ranger, without hesitation, politely approached the man, and asked him if he would like to touch the bell. The man excitedly said he’d love to, and his family watched on in delight as the Park Ranger gently took his hand and guided him beyond the security ropes and up to the bell. The Park Ranger patiently placed the man’s hand on the bell, slowly moving it over key elements and the infamous crack, all while telling him essential facts and stories about the bell. The man was absolutely beaming as he took it all in and got to “see” the bell through touch and story. The man’s family had tears in their eyes as they witnessed this kind and gracious act. My husband and I glanced at each other and we both had tears in our eyes too.

That Park Ranger made the Liberty Bell accessible and inclusive, and in doing so, embodied the very spirit of the bell and the American values it represents. That Park Ranger and their beautiful gesture made our experience unforgettable.

Sincerely,
Stacey
