Revegetating the Elwha River banks

Be a part of history, get your hands dirty and have fun while doing it! Experience the beauty of the Elwha River with NPCA, as we plant native plants on the banks of the Elwha.

We will work alongside the skilled botanists of the National Park Service to restore native plants to the Elwha River basin. The land was exposed by the 2011-2012 removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon Dams: the largest dam removal project in history!

Volunteers will hike between one-quarter of a mile to more than one mile to reach the planting site. The hike may be muddy and uneven. Planting involves stooping, kneeling and the use of small hand tools. We plant rain or shine but if frozen ground or unsuitable weather (e.g., high wind, lightning) greet us, we will instead remain indoors to sow seeds, pack plants and weed at the Matt Albright Native Plant Nursery. Keep an eye on your email in the 24 hours preceding the event for any important updates.

Look for a driveway with a brown sign for maintenance, operations, and deliveries. Drive up this driveway and take your second right. Continue on this street until you find parking in front of the Administrative Headquarters building.

Alternate meeting location, in case of unsuitable weather: Matt Albright Native Plant Nursery, 323 Pinnell Rd. Sequim, WA 98283 (located inside Robin Hill County Park)

WHO: You! Anyone willing and able to hike in plants and spend the day working in a beautiful spot, albeit in potentially wet weather conditions. (This planting work is best suited for ages 12+.)

CONTACT or RSVP: Please RSVP to Julia Tesch at jtesch@npca.org or 206-771-4388 by Monday, February 6. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!

OTHER INFO:

  • Remember to bring plenty of water and a sack lunch.

  • Tools and gloves are provided. However, consider bringing an additional pair of work gloves – if conditions are wet, a fresh pair will feel great after lunch!

  • Wear your most waterproof hiking boots – the hike to the planting site can be muddy and wet.

  • There are no restrooms at the planting site, so wilderness bathroom rules are in effect.

  • Free camping is limited and available at Heart O’ the Hills Campground on a first come, first served basis!

For more information, email jtesch@npca.org.

We hope you will join us to see firsthand the Elwha as we help it return to its natural state.
