Stonewall 50: The Basics

This guide, released shortly after the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, answers frequently asked questions about the events that took place from June 28th to July 3rd 1969 in Greenwich Village.

This guide is for anyone who would like to learn more about Stonewall, and answers questions such as:

  • What was the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall riots?

  • Why was the Stonewall Inn raided by the police?

  • What happened to the Stonewall Inn after the uprising?

  • Stonewall is a national monument. What does that mean?

This guide was created by the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project, Making Gay History, New York Public Library, GLSEN, National Parks Conservation Association, and the Stonewall 50 Consortium.

Marching for Pride: The Basics

This guide, released in 2020, answers frequently asked questions about the first LGBTQ marches that took place in 1970, exactly one year after the Stonewall Uprising, a inflection point in the effort to secure human and civil rights for LGBTQ Americans. That event is commemorated at Stonewall National Monument.

This guide is for anyone who would like to learn more about the origins of the LGBTQ marches that are observed on/around June of every year throughout the globe. It answers questions such as:

  • When did the first Pride marches take place?

  • Where was the first Pride march held?

  • Were the 1970 Pride marches the first public LGBTQ civil rights demonstrations in the United States?

  • How did New York City’s first Pride march come about?
