I hired, not once but twice over the years, a guide at Gettysburg, Edwin Clausey, who I am sure is retired now, to take me and children around the park and do an educational presentation so the kids would understand. He was so knowledgeable, so interesting and so courteous. We learned so much (which is why I did it a second time many years later). As a person who had ancestors in every war, it is important to learn and understand and to preserve these hallowed places. And to make sure succeeding generations continues to pass along that understanding.
Sincerely,
Gettysburg National Military Park
The 1863 battle in this small farming community resulted in more than 50,000 casualties over three days, making it the deadliest engagement of the American Civil War. This battle is now referred to as the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy” — the last meaningful offensive the South would conduct against northern forces. The visitor center at Gettysburg features one of the largest collections of Civil War artifacts in the country.
