One of the National Parks we enjoyed going to was Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes, Colorado. Maybe because it is close, we have gone there a number of times. We often camped in a tent when we stayed there when our three boys were young.
One of our favorite camping places was the Moraine Park Campground. There were often lots of hummingbirds there because people had started to feed them. Our boys always enjoyed hikes led by Rangers. They would lead us many places and give us much information, and our boys were always full of questions.
We also enjoyed hiking up to the series of lakes in that park, starting with Bear Lake and going on up to the high lakes. I think I remember three above Bear Lake. One of the lakes has many beautiful water lilies. We loved the scent of the pines as we were hiking and the birds singing. Of course the boys always enjoyed the chipmunks and had to stop and watch them a while. We all enjoyed seeing the Mountain Blue Jays, they are so colorful and usually very friendly.
Sometimes the boys and I would sleep a long time in the morning. Armin, my husband, usually got up early and made a fire in the fire pit. Then we had a fire to warm up when we got up and also it was great to have hot coffee and something to make a hot breakfast.
We always enjoyed Rocky Mountain National Park. The last time we went my husband, Armin, and I went by ourselves and stayed at a bed and breakfast in Estes. That, too, was fun.

This dramatic landscape of towering mountains and alpine lakes encompasses more than 265,000 acres - 95% of which are designated wilderness. With this intentional focus on protecting this unique landscape, there are few developed infrastructure areas in the park, which leads to traffic problems in areas including the Bear Lake Road Corridor and right off Trail Ridge Road. Alpine tundra also encompasses approximately 1/3 of the park. Alpine tundra is a fundamental and fragile resource, which requires park managers to give this ecosystem increased attention for protection.
