Greetings from Grand Canyon National Park

While hiking with a friend on the North Kibab trail from the North Rim to the river, we witnessed a true unsung hero in action. It was a hot sunny day and we stopped at a shady spring for a rest and to refill our water. A ranger came up the trail from below assisting a woman who was in distress. The Ranger was carrying two back packs; her own and the woman she was helping. She removed them, tended to the woman, withdrew several water bladders from her pack, filled them and dashed back down the trial toward the river. After we had continued our hike, we came upon the Ranger again. This time, helping a man who was very distressed. We asked if we could assist, the Ranger declined. At some point we turned back up the trail. When we reached the same shady spring to rest, we encountered the Ranger again. She had helped the man, also with a large back pack, up the trial to the spring, cooled him off, gave him food and water. While we watched the Ranger tend to the man and woman, 2 other pairs of hikers heading up the trial stopped to thank the Ranger for the food, or water she had provided to them. Turns out this was her patrol. She went up and down this trial every day looking for people in need. She told us the radios didn’t work in that part of the park. So she went looking for people in need. My friend and I are convinced she saved 2 lives that day. She is a true unsung hero.

Sincerely,
Ed
