n 2023, I took my father to Great Smoky Mountains National Park after he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He’d always wanted to visit more national parks, so we set aside a day just for the two of us. We spent a quiet afternoon sharing a glass of whiskey, talking about life, family, and the years behind and ahead of us while watching the fog slowly roll down the mountains.
My Dad passed away in late 2024, but not before meeting his grandson, my son. That day in the Smokies has become one of my most treasured memories. Now I bring my family back every year, grateful for the time we shared and for a place that helps keep his spirit close.
