Greetings from Isle Royale National Park

In 2004 I stepped off a boat from Cooper Harbor at Isle Royale National Park. That visit changed my life. I have been back every year since as a student, volunteer, teacher, paddler, backpacker and moose bone collector. The peace I find on the Island is overwhelming. I sleep well and work and play hard. Being a repeat visitor, Isle Royale is a component of my sense of place. Every trip I learn more, meet great people, and push myself in new ways. When I step onto the island I breath easier, when I reboard there is a sense of loss.
Isle Royale is a treasure, remote enough for semi isolation, close enough to enjoy. It is my special place

Isle Royale National Park

This rugged, roadless island is the largest wilderness area in Michigan. See moose, beavers, foxes, snowshoe hares, loons, osprey, bats, and other animals without the interruption of cars and other aspects of modern civilization. Try hiking sections of the popular Greenstone Ridge Trail, the longest and highest ridge on the island and access point for many of the campsites, to experience a cross-section of the park’s untamed habitat.

“The parks are Americas greatest treasure, The peoples lands, where the environment can remain untrammeled. Upon entering our National Parks I feel welcome in time, place, and peace. With only a few steps one can leave the crowds behind and explore the lands as a new visitor and a welcome citizen.”
