Greetings from Glacier National Park

I “selected” Glacier because it is the one I retired from and spent the most time in. But over 27 years I have worked and lived in 5 National Parks: Mount Rainier, Grand Teton, Olympic, Denali and Glacier (and before that, several National Forests in MT, ID, WA, OR, WY & UT. Since my college days.) They were my home. Notice a common theme? “I want to see mountains, Gandalf, Mountains!!” And Muir would add, Forests! Trees!! At one time, I considered going into natural resource and environmental law; did very well on the LSAT; started taking some prep courses… But then due to several soul-rending experiences–we do not all respond the same way to various things– I decided [deliberately] “to go back to the woods, where I was better known.” Thoreau also said, “All of Nature is my bride.” You might say, I’ve had Five. Places of great natural beauty, quiet splendor and unspoken magnificence were his great consolation, and they have been mine. They have probably saved my life AND my soul.
The National Parks… truly America’s best idea.

Sincerely,
Rick (no, a different Ranger Rick)
