I first visited the States in 1958 and had three aims– to experience 1. New York City. 2. New Orleans and 3. The Grand Canyon. I travelled by Greyhound bus and stayed in Hostels. At the Grand Canyon I signed in and hiked down the longer, less steep South Rim trail. At the bottom I slept in the open ( I had a very limited budget!) and next afternoon hiked up the steep short trail meeting a group of tourists with guide on donkeys but otherwise seeing nobody. It was wonderful. Later after marrying an American I took my 7yr old son for a hike on the North Rim. We sat on a rock when he was tired and I ,wanting to distract him ,pointed out the eagle flying overhead.A very tired little boy responded,“He’s waiting for me to die!”
