Utah’s five national parks are supposed to have the clearest air in the country but right now they don’t.
The Clean Air Act’s Regional Haze Rule is meant to fix that, but the state of Utah is currently revising its haze plan to allow for more air pollution in the state, not less. The Department of Environmental Quality is taking public comment through October 1 on their proposed plan revision and what regulators hear from Utahns will shape how much pollution keeps drifting over Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion, and over the towns downwind of the smokestacks.
