When the Bureau of Land Management proposed to allow 18,000 acres of oil and gas drilling within one mile of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve without legitimate public engagement and consultation with the Navajo Nation and other key stakeholders, we were enraged.
Oil and gas drilling in this area would not only have ignored its sacredness to the Navajo, it would have damaged air quality, noise and the signature dark skies of one of Colorado’s most cherished parks. Thankfully, because the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires the government to evaluate environmental impacts of major projects on public lands and meaningful engagement and consultation with stakeholders, the government ultimately took the proposal off the table. It is our hope that the leases will not resurface and that, if they do, our voices will continue to be heard through the power of NEPA.
But a new proposal from the Trump administration to rollback NEPA now threatens this hope, and we need to take action.
The proposal would limit public input allowing companies to essentially conduct environmental reviews themselves. Worse still, the changes would redefine which projects need environmental reviews in the first place and ignore indirect or cumulative impacts of a project, including climate change.
Denver is one of only two locations in the country where a public hearing is taking place for the proposed rollback of NEPA. While speaking spots at the hearing are full at this time, you are invited to join us and our allies across the street at The Alliance Center at The People’s Hearing to honor ALL voices that NEPA protects.
