Virginia Offshore Drilling Rally & Meeting, Feb. 21

For the first time in decades, our coasts could be opened up to oil and gas leasing if the Department of Interior's draft leasing plan for federal waters goes into effect.

This plan threatens dozens of coastal parks, including Virginia’s prized Assateague Island National Seashore and Colonial National Historical Park.

The parks along U.S. coastlines protect unique marine environments, shelter our nation’s fisheries, support thousands of jobs and bring billions of dollars into our economy. They also honor important portions of our country’s history, such as Captain John Smith’s travels. These places should be protected — not imperiled by spills that too often occur when we industrialize our oceans with oil and gas production.

It’s not too late to speak out against this plan. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is accepting comments on this draft leasing plan at a public meeting in Richmond on February 21.

Join us in reminding BOEM that the waters, wildlife and local economies of our coastal national parks are too valuable to be endangered by offshore drilling.
