U.S. Forest Service listening session regarding federal mineral leases and Voyageurs National Park

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking public input to inform their decision regarding federal mineral leases held by Twin Metals Minnesota.

Twin Metals is a proposed sulfide-ore copper mine project that lies within the watershed of Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Pollution from this mine would flow directly toward the park and wilderness area, threatening the wildlife and water quality of the region.

The Forest Service has already said that it “is deeply concerned by the location of the leases … and by the inherent risks associated with potential copper, nickel and other sulfide mining operations within that watershed.” NPCA also commissioned a study that documents how pollution from sulfide mine development may damage Voyageurs National Park’s delicate natural resources, particularly its waterways and wildlife. Show the Forest Service that you value clean water at Voyageurs National Park by attending the listening session in Ely on Tuesday, July 19 at 5 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to show your support for the protection of Voyageurs and the Boundary Waters from risky sulfide-ore copper mining. Ask the Forest Service to deny the mineral lease extensions held by Twin Metals.
