NPCA submitted the following positions to members of the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources ahead of a hearing scheduled for September 16, 2026.
S. 4870 – Earth MRI Reauthorization Act: NPCA supports this legislation which reauthorizes the EarthMRI program at the U.S. Geological Survey. This program invests in remote sensing technologies to improve geologic mapping that can better identify likely mineral deposits and provides industry, states, federal land managers and the public with a better idea of where mineral resources are. The data developed helps reduce the need for unnecessary speculative exploration drilling and can help identify areas of high resource potential and low ecological and social conflict. This modern approach to mineral exploration is a smart investment in a more responsible approach to mining development on public lands, including those in national park landscapes.
S. 2644 - Camden National Battlefield Park Study Act: NPCA supports this legislation as an important first step toward evaluating the national significance of the Battle of Camden. A formal study will provide an opportunity to ensure that the site is thoughtfully evaluated through the National Park Service’s established process. Additionally, we encourage continued collaboration among the National Park Service, the National Heritage Area, local communities, historians, and preservation partners as this study moves forward.
S. 4103 - Save Our Sequoias Act: NPCA is currently neutral on this legislation, however we have significant concerns with the refusal by the administration to be transparent on its management of sequoia groves. Despite requests for updated information on the Sequoia Action Plan which was last submitted to Congress in 2023, the administration has not provided this information. The administration has also not provided the current status of funding and staffing for its work on sequoia grove management, including how the steep cuts to NPS staff have impacted the work. This information is necessary to inform any next steps by Congress on this issue.
