Steamtown National Historic Site
Take a trip back in time to the era of steam at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where you can explore the rich heritage of the American railroad and the steam locomotive.
Take a ride in a historic commuter car pulled behind a vintage steam locomotive around the railroad yard or even on extended trips around the Pennsylvania area! Walk through the Technology Museum for the nuts and bolts explanation of the evolution of the steam locomotive, and visit the History Museum for the human history of the American railroad. Living history programs allow you to put yourself in the shoes of a depression-era hobo, a 1920’s yard worker, and other historic characters of the rail yard and locomotive industry.

If You Go
Scranton Limited short train rides take visitors around the rail yard of the site and are first-come, first-serve. Steamtown Excursions are more ambitious and require reservations. There are three excursions that travel to three different Pennsylvania towns: Moscow, Tobyhanna, and Delaware Water Gap. What better way to appreciate the steam locomotive than to take a ride in one! Create great memories aboard a Steamtown vintage locomotive.
