We live near the Cataldo Mission in Kootenai county and have supported restoration of this facility on all occassions. On a somewhat related matter, many times we have driven past the historical marker on Hwy 12 south of Lapwai identifying St. Josephs mission. This past week we found the time to make the side trip to see this historic site. We stopped momentarily on the pavement and stepped out of our vehicle to read the marker on a waist high pedestal... We did not set foot beyond toward the mission building. Within seconds a lady started yelling at us from behind the house to the left. We were not sure of any problem, until we heard her yell profanities, call the cops, get out of here, keep off the grass, and whatever else. We left immediatley without confrontation. It was not a pleasant experience and for some folks might prove frightening. We are not interested in violating and sacred Nez Perce properties. Quite the opposite. If this yelling and shouting is a common occurance perhaps a no visitors comment should be posted at the highway marker? This expecially might aid in that there is no parking at the mission. Please know this is not meant to be a complaint letter, rather constructive remark.
