Mount Rushmore National Memorial

, South Dakota

Acreage: 1,278.45
Category: National Memorial
Date Established: 03/03/1925

Carved into the Black Hills of South Dakota are the iconic faces of four former presidents of the United States--George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. These men were chosen to represent the first 150 years of American history and America’s cultural heritage.

The idea came from Doane Robinson to promote tourism in South Dakota and his idea was wildly successful--the park attracts almost 3 million park visitors every year. Gutzon Borglum designed the sculpture. Though he passed away before its completion, over 400 workers helped bring his vision to life.

Today visitors come to appreciate this colossal man-made creation, learn about the design and construction process, appreciate its significance as a symbol of the American history of “monumental” leaders, and to learn about the natural and cultural history of the Black Hills region.

—Caroline Griffith

If You Go

Not everyone was pleased with the decision to carve four American presidents on a mountain that held spiritual significance for the Lakota tribe. In response, a memorial to Crazy Horse is being carved in the Black Hills 17 miles away from Mount Rushmore. Once completed the Crazy Horse Memorial will be the largest outdoor sculpture in the world. Visitors who get an early start can see both of these incredible sculptures in one day.

Of all the parks I have visited, this is one of the parks I certainly plan to visit. What an inspiration!! The reason I want to visit is due to the rich culture it was intended to remind us of in the future. I love America and the principles and character this country was founded upon, although it seems we have forgotten parts of that. All monuments have been erected for a reason. Reading what 'shannon' wrote in Feb has motivated me to pay a visit to this great monument even more!!! Seeing it in person is probably well worth the price. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Mount Rushmore is very spectacular. I have been there myself and I have never seen any hand crafted memorial as big as this one. I love the surrounding landscape because I love the West and the mountains as well. I have been to 44 of the 50 states in the United States and I love traveling and exploring the outdoors. When I get married down the road and have kids I will take my kids to the Western States to show them all the history that I have seen myself.

I've been to Mt. Rushmore and I have to say "The area is breathtaking". There is more than just the figures carved into the Mts. There is a vast amount of information arranged in different rooms which will add to the education of all children. While I was there, I saw visitors from many different countries. I felt very proud to be an American.

Gosh..that Shannon comment was so insightful. Why didn't my history books tell me these stories. She sounds so intelligent. Probably read multiple novels about each of the people depicted. Thanks Shannon for your Euro-American input. Sad to say my ancestry is probably the same as yours. I call myself an American though. Rushmore is great. Beautiful country, beautiful people. You all will enjoy the trip. It's a web site for vacation. Let us leave the politics out. God Bless America. Dennis

I hate Mount Rushmore. It is overpriced, and I liked the Mountains just the way they were before the destruction. We are people who only only exist for a microscopic time that those Mountains have and will be there. I do not like the destruction one bit. Not to mention, I do not think of these presidents as heroic leaders what so ever. I tend to think about the hidden truth of these leaders which is that they were imperialist murderers who together exterminated 16 million people and enslaved millions more, as well as stoled 3 billion acres of land from the Indigenous people who were already occupying the land for thousands of years prior. I do not care for seeing these colonized mountains with the faces of these genocidal "heroic leaders" nor the racist town that they reside in. Heroic to who? Look past the caucasian written, made for school, history book versions of these men as well as US history and enlighten yourselves. Thank you for respecting my comment. (By the way I am a person of Euro-American descent, do not let my words fool you.)

We completely enjoyed our visit to Sequoia National Park. It should not be missed. Nearby, Plantation B&B in Lemon Cove was, indeed, a gem.
