National Parks Group Supports Creation of America's First Tribal National Park in South Dakota

Statement by Senior Vice President for Policy, Ron Tipton

“The National Park Service today, made their plans official for the establishment of America’s first Tribal National Park at the South Unit of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The announcement is a direct outgrowth of years of planning and discussion and we support this bold new venture.

“Now the hard work begins with developing the transition strategy, the guidelines for park operation, and the legislation that will make this partnership between the Oglala Sioux and the National Park Service a strong and successful undertaking that will benefit the tribe, the Park Service, and the American people.”
