Park Arkansas Post National Memorial Although the name of this park stems from the French trading post near the banks of the Mississippi River, Native Americans, most recently the Quapaw, inhabited the area for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. Visitors can learn about the historic nature of the park and of the many stories, ranging from expedition of Hernando de Soto to the Battle of Arkansas Post in the Civil War. Visitors can also stroll the nature trails and try to steal a glimpse of one of the area's American alligators or endangered Traill's flycatchers.

Blog Post San Antonio Missions Nominated for Prestigious International Recognition Earlier this month, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar had a difficult decision to make. Each year, the Department of the Interior can officially nominate just two sites to be recognized as World Heritage Sites by the World Heritage Center (part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO). NPCA is pleased that Salazar officially authorized the San Antonio Franciscan Missions for the nomination this year. This site includes the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park as well as the Mission San Antonio de Valero, better known as the Alamo.

Park Chickamauga And Chattanooga National Military Park This site is the nation’s oldest and largest military park. Among towering oaks, more than 600 monuments and markers invite visitors to pause and reflect on the costly battles waged here over the course of several months in 1863. Union and Confederate forces fought here for control of Chattanooga and, ultimately, nearly all of Tennessee; though Confederates claimed an initial victory at Chickamauga, Federal forces eventually overtook Confederate troops and pushed them back into Georgia. In addition to the cannons, monuments and markers, the park’s historic cabins, living history program and extensive museum collection allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the events that took place here more than 150 years ago.

Park Boston African American National Historic Site In the early 1800s, the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston was home to one of the largest communities of free African Americans in the country. Unlike other U.S. states, Massachusetts effectively outlawed slavery in its constitution in 1783, decades before the 13th Amendment abolished slavery nationwide. Boston became a thriving center for the abolitionist movement and a critical link in the Underground Railroad. The historic site interprets 15 different structures in this storied neighborhood, including two important buildings, the Abiel Smith School and the African Meeting House, which combine to make up the Museum of African American History. Other historic buildings include a school, the homes of several prominent Boston African Americans and a memorial honoring the first regiment of African American troops to serve in the Civil War.

Victory Navajo Citizens Stop Developers from Building an Egregious Resort and Tramway on the Rim of the Grand Canyon Developers have been attempting for years to build a massive 420-acre resort hotel and aerial tramway right on the rim of the Grand Canyon. In February 2018, Western Navajo citizens unanimously opposed allowing this destructive project on their land, effectively ending the threat to this landmark national park and its deeply significant cultural sites.
