Park Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail Designated as the first national water trail, the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail follows the historic routes of the English explorer’s voyages between 1607 and 1609 on the Chesapeake Bay, as well as the York, James and other rivers. Following Smith’s original maps and journals, the trail spans 3,000 miles in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.

Park John Day Fossil Beds National Monument Some 54 million years ago, this entire region of Oregon lay beneath the Pacific Ocean. Within the striated rock, scientists have found fossilized evidence of more than 2,200 plants and animals and of great shifts in temperature and precipitation that may reveal clues to the planet’s climactic cycles. The park’s 14,000 acres are divided into three parts — the Clarno, Painted Hills and Sheep Rock Units — offering rugged hiking trails, spring and summer wildflowers, scenic drives, and of course, a museum of fascinating fossils to help visitors reflect on the planet’s long history.

Park Muir Woods National Monument It’s possible, after a short walk in this national monument, to completely forget that downtown San Francisco is less than 15 miles away. This relatively small park, which is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, contains an impressive diversity of plants and animals, including an intact old-growth coast redwood forest and habitat that supports many ferns, wildflowers, small birds and mammals, and several federally listed species. Naturalist John Muir himself called the park "the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world."

It was a point of supply for Meriwether Lewis’s Corps of Discovery, the site of John Brown’s abolitionist raid in 1859, a key Civil War battlefield, and the meeting place for the Niagara Movement, a 1906 gathering of civil rights leaders. Its position at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers not only set the stage for such historic events but also makes the park a haven for rare native plants.
