Application: Texas Young Leaders Advocacy Council

The Texas office of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is looking for college age individuals and young professionals in the greater Austin area to join our year long advocacy program.

Texas YL NPLD Makala Thornton

Young Leader, Makayla Thornton, removes invasive brush from Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park during National Public Lands Day 2021.

Since 2016 the Texas office of NPCA has been engaging youth and young adults to connect with our public lands and advocate for our treasured places. Over the years, our Young Leaders Advocacy Council has volunteered at the national parks, educated their community on local issues and lobbied for our parks at our nation’s Capital.

With over 400 sites, our national parks tell stories that connect us to the land and with one another, however, they face threats every day from lack of funding to nearby damaging development. By engaging the next generation of park diverse advocates, we hope to protect the parks for the next 100 years and build a park system of places and stories that are welcoming, relevant and open to all.

The Texas Young Leaders Advocacy Council is now accepting applications for the August 2022 – June 2023 cohort year. If you are a young professional in the greater San Antonio area, looking to connect deeper in civic engagement locally and nationally, want to share your experiences in the outdoors, have a passion for accurately preserving history or simply curious about this leadership program: we encourage you to apply.

In the program you will have to opportunity to:

  • Participate in monthly meetings with speakers to learn about the national parks, NPCA, and develop advocacy skills so you can advocate for issues important to you;

  • Attend events outreach events with NPCA staff at Texas national parks like the San Antonio Missions NHP, Big Thicket National Preserve and Lyndon B. Johnson NHP

  • Be an NPCA Ambassador to engage and empower your community to connect and protect our national park sites so they can be welcoming and share the stories of all people;

  • Have fun with a new group of people!

Selected council members will serve for a 1-year, renewable term from August to June. Monthly time commitment can vary based on regional travel opportunities, but typically participants can be expected to spend 5-8 hours a month between group calls, advocacy opportunities, and online learning. All members are expected to join as NPCA members ($25/year). Outside of basic local travel, all other associated costs such as meals, travel and lodging will be covered by NPCA. Deadline to apply is Sunday, July 31st by midnight. For more information about the program, please contact Chloe Crumley at
