Pat Kaspar Earth Day Letter

I well remember the first Earth Day celebration in 1970.  At the time, we were in Tennessee, fighting Chattanooga's smokestack pollution and excited to see this initiation into environmental awareness.  I'm gratified to see how far the city has come since then.  1970 was also the year we moved back to California.  In recent years, I've trudged trails to plant seedlings, cleaned  San Francisco Bay's shorelines, and gathered South Bay creek-trash with friends and family.  This year took me to Pulgas Ridge, a Redwood City open space preserve.  What a delightful surprise to share the wheelbarrow work with a woman who volunteers at a local equine therapy facility that my grandson attends.  Yes, I've done National Park events as well, with Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

I appreciate having so many choices and take advantage of them even on "un-Earth Days," those everyday times when environmental organizations offer opportunities to build a trail, weed out non-native plants, or otherwise restore both nature's balance and my own.

I also commend the coordinators, rangers, and other behind-the-scenes-and-shovels people who pull every project together--no small achievement.  Their energy, expertise, and enthusiasm make each experience worth an ounce of Technu on the body and a pound of mud on the boots.

So what's our next project???

Best wishes . . . and thanks for all you do.

Patricia Kaspar
