The Pacific region's 31 parks are studies in contrasts and extremes. Only 100 miles separate the lowest point in the United States (Death Valley) from the highest point in the lower 48 (Mount Whitney in Sequoia National Park). Its stark desert environments contain as much mystery and beauty as its underwater kelp forests and coral reefs. Known best for its natural resource parks, the Pacific is also rich in historic resources.

NPCA saw a clear need for a presence in the Pacific Northwest due to a number of unique threats to its parks. The rivers and streams of Olympic, Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and John Day Fossil Beds support several species of fish, including salmon that are continuously threatened by pollution and habitat loss. Meanwhile, parks in Washington State face poor air quality and dense traffic congestion due to their proximity to large cities.

NPCA's Yellowstone Program is leading efforts to protect our nation's first national park. We are working to: safeguard the park in the winter through moving to a snowcoach only transportation system; protect Yellowstone’s bison by expanding access to critical habitat outside the park; improve and restore habitat for Yellowstone’s pronghorn antelope; protect and restore native fisheries; secure additional funding for Yellowstone to make up the $23 million annual gap between what Yellowstone needs to operate and what it actually receives; and decrease and mitigate the impacts of climate change on Yellowstone National Park.

Our Mission: To protect and enhance America's National Parks for present and future generations.
America's national parks are the touchstones of our shared history and culture. In some ways, they represent the soul of the nation. They represent our hopes, our dreams, our struggles. They are our absolute best places.

The national park sites of the Midwest are steeped in history, wrapped in the fabric of American culture, and spectacular in their natural beauty.
From the origins of the Underground Railroad to the Gateway Arch symbolizing Western expansion, our nation's history comes alive. The natural wonders of the Midwest are as varied as the landscape. There are dramatic sandstone cliffs, shifting sand dunes, and many islands filled with native wildlife in the Great Lakes. Thousands of acres of tallgrass prairie and scenic riverways wind throughout the region.

Alaska is a land of superlatives…biggest park, highest mountain, and most bears. In fact, two-thirds of the acreage of the entire U.S. National Park System is in Alaska -- that's 54 million acres! Much of this was added in 1980 when Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), one of the great milestones in the history of American land conservation.
