FEATURED PARK
Featured Park: Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site, Tuskegee, Alabama

View Slideshow

"No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem."
--Booker T. Washington, 1895

When the Tuskegee Institute opened in 1881, the vast majority of African Americans still lived in rural communities in the southern United States and racial segregation was commonplace. Booker T. Washington, a writer and civil rights activist, founded Tuskegee because he believed that educating black Americans in agricultural and technical arts was the key to ensuring self-sufficiency and empowerment for the race. Located 40 miles east of Montgomery, Alabama, the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site preserves and commemorates the story of Booker T. Washington and the powerful impact this small institute had in improving the lives of all Americans.

NPCA AT WORK FOR THE PARKS
Important Parks Bill Makes Progress on the Hill

U.S. CapitolNPCA rang in the New Year with the passage of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 in the Senate on January 15. This passage marks real progress for our national parks, but needs support in the House to become a reality.

This Act is a compilation of public lands bills, including several that are important for the protection and interpretation of America's National Park System. Examples of the provisions include:

  • The addition of the Barrett Farm to Minute Man National Historical Park in Massachusetts.
  • The expansion of the boundary at Little River Canyon National Preserve in Alabama.
  • The establishment of a commemorative trail connected to Women's Rights National Historical Park in New York.
  • The expansion of the boundary at Fort Davis National Historic Site in Texas.
  • An act to designate as wilderness the landscape within Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

NPCA considers this a significant bill to protect America's priceless heritage, and looks forward to its passage in the House of Representatives.

THOUGHTS FOR ALL TIME

“You can't put a price on silence or solitude. Future generations deserve to experience the wildness and beauty of these lands, and to leave them as a legacy to generations that follow.”

-- Robert Redford, actor, director, and National Resources Defense Council trustee, calling on the Bush Administration to halt issuance of drilling leases in Utah public lands. NPCA was part of a coalition of environmental and preservation groups taking legal action against the Bureau of Land Management to stop the land auction. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar canceled the disputed oil and gas leases earlier this month.
