Accomplishments

  • Submitted comments on White Pine Energy and Desert Rock, two proposed coal-fired power plants that would affect the air quality, wildlife and plant species within the surrounding national parks including Great Basin, Zion, Mesa Verde, and Chaco Canyon.

  • Filed an amicus brief opposing the construction of 2 new coal-fired power plants in Utah in proximity to Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

  • Participated in Black Canyon of the Gunnison water lawsuit.

  • Participated in crafting resolution of elk issue at Rocky Mountain National Park.

  • Organized two National Public Lands Day events. At Rocky Mountain National Park, we worked with various federal agencies including the Park Service, environmental groups, NPCA members and the public to assist the Park with a trail realignment project. At Saguaro National Park, SWRO staff pulled buffelgrass, an invasive species that inhibits the growth of saguaro cactus, exacerbates wildfires and subsequently affects desert tortoise habitat.
