Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
Frederick Douglass, himself an escaped slave, was one of the foremost abolitionists and civil rights advocates of the Civil War Era. He was a Stationmaster on the Underground Railroad and helped ensure that emancipation was a fundamental Union cause in the war.
His beautiful D.C. home, purchased when he was 59, provides a window to the past and reveals the private life of a revolutionary and iconic man. Walk through the rooms where he lived, learn about his life in the Visitor Center museum, and view the relics that illustrate his identity and his accomplishments.
