Fort Washington
Fort Washington has stood on the banks of the Potomac River in Maryland for over 180 years—guarding Washington, D.C. from attack. It is the only permanent fortification built to defend the river approach to the Nation's Capital.
If You Go
Fort Washington has Civil War artillery, small arms, and muzzle-loading musket demonstrations one Sunday a month from April through October. For the cannon the park uses a reproduction 6-pounder field cannon, named "Joseph" after Major Haskins, commanding officer of the fort in 1861 Check with the park before you go to learn more about the demonstration schedule and park entrance fees.
