National Parks Special: Bringing the Parks to the People

This 23 minute documentary provides good insight into how a group of citizens can come together to create new national parks. It tells the story of how the Golden Gate National Recreation Area was initiated to protect some of the most valuable real estate in the country, valuable once for its development potential, but now valuable as a refuge for rare and endangered species and as a popular recreation area for Bay Area residents and millions of visitors a year.

The film interviews a number of key people who were instrumental in the fight to save these lands from development, including one of NPCA's long-time supporters, Amy Meyer, the author of "The New Guardians of the Golden Gate." Lastly, the film documents the important connection that this park has to the urban environment, and the extensive education and outreach programs that have been developed to involve urban youth. The film was produced by KQED, the public television station serving much of Northern California. Enjoy!
