Great Escapes: Lassen Volcanic National Park
Lassen Volcanic National Park is located in northern California, just southeast of Mt. Shasta. Established in 1916 because of its significance as an active volcanic landscape, the park is named for Lassen Peak, considered to be one of the world’s largest plug dome volcanoes. Lassen Peak first erupted in May 1914. The park still has many active geothermal areas (watch where you step!), protects 160,000 acres of wildlife habitat, and boasts 150 miles of trails, including many that enable you to see glaciated canyons and sulfur vents and gorgeous lakes and streams. Lassen Volcanic National Park is currently building a new year-round visitor services facility at the south entrance, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007. The Loomis Museum, located at the north end of the park, houses a variety of exhibits, information desk, and book sales. Ranger-led programs are offered during the summer months. Visit the park website at www.nps.gov/lavo or call Park Headquarters at (530) 595-4444 for more information.
