Park Funding Update: Park Appropriations for FY07

The president’s recently proposed budget for fiscal year 2007 would cut the overall NPS budget by another $100 million while slightly increasing funds in the park operations account. Unfortunately the nominal operations increase will not match inflationary pressures. The end result will be further reductions in park staffing and programs and raised entrance fees in many parks.

But Congress is currently working on the 2007 budget. This past week, 32 Senators and 105 Representatives (nearly a third)-a large portion of Congress-made a strong statement that investing in our parks must be a priority by sending letters to the Appropriations Subcommittees that fund parks. These letters urged the removal of the President's proposed $100 million cut to the NPS total budget and requested an increase to the NPS operations budget by $150 million in 2007. This shows that our message is being heard and hopefully we can increase the 2007 NPS budget above the President's request.
