Discover your America!: “Rediscovered Waterfall”
While cleaning out and moving some old map cabinets in 2003, Russ Weatherbee, a park ranger and wildlife biologist, found an old planning map that had a dot on it labeled “Crystal Creek Falls.” Weatherbee’s initial hike into the area revealed nothing. But he subsequently found what appeared to be white water along a section of the stream that had a steep gradient while looking at a high-resolution aerial image. Weatherbee and Geologist Brian Rasmussen hiked into this area during the winter of 2003 and located the 200 plus ft waterfall, composed of several cascades.
Visitors will be able to view the falls from a trail equipped with safety railings as soon as mid July. Call the Visitor Center at 530-246-1225 for more information and to sign up for ranger guided hikes.
