Great Escapes: Pinnacles National Monument
Do you like hiking in wilderness? Taking pictures of rugged landscapes? Climbing rock spires reaching into the sky? Would you like to have a glimpse of a free-flying California Condor? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we’ve got a “Great Escape” for you! Set aside in 1908, “…to protect the Pinnacle rocks and its caves for its scenic and scientific value…” Pinnacles National Monument is evidence of an ancient, violent volcanic eruption that occurred in what is now the greater Los Angeles area, more than 23 million years ago. Plate tectonic movement has caused the remnants of that volcanic explosion to travel a distance of over 190 miles along the San Andreas Rift Zone to arrive at its current location. As the Central Coast’s hidden jewel, it offers tremendous opportunities to explore wilderness, to walk through dark caves, to rock climb over 1,000 routes, and to bird-watch. Your adventure awaits you! Visit the park website at www.nps.gov/pinn, or call the park’s headquarters at 831-389-4485.
