Do you remember seeing Teddy the Park Bear at one of our Northwest parks this past summer? Maybe you even had your picture taken with Teddy. And, hopefully, you were among the thousands to have signed a postcard in support of the Centennial Act.
UPDATE: Over 5,000 visitors to our Northwest national parks signed cards in support of the Centennial Act. Upon the close of the TrackingTeddy campaign, Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN), original sponsor of the Centennial Act, along with Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA) and Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) held a congressional hearing to discuss chronic underfunding of Northwest national parks. Nearly 100 people attended the hearing held in Bellevue, Washington. (2005). NPCA’s National Board member and chief operating officer of REI, Sally Jewell read some of your comments to show our congressmen how important national parks are to park visitors from near and far.
WHAT YOU SAID: “We all need a place to get back in touch with our deeper selves and our parks and wildlife do just that for me. Unlike a towering metropolis, we cannot hope to ever recreate the tremendous diversity of a natural ecosystem.” - Lynnwood, WA
“We need to maintain our 100+ year legacy of national Parks for future generations. We owe it to them, just as other generations took care of us. These parks cannot be allowed to deteriorate any further.” - Mercer Island, WA
Our national parks protect and preserve irreplaceable natural, cultural and historical resources for current and future generations to enjoy, to learn about nature and our country’s history, and to appreciate and value the natural world and contributions of past generations and many cultures.” - Seattle, WA
WHAT'S NEXT:NPCA will be delivering all 5,000 cards to members of congress to demonstrate support for the Centennial Act. You can see if your member of congress is a co-sponsor of the Centennial Act here. |
