Local Congressman, Norm Dicks, Wins NPCA’s Highest Award
NPCA recently awarded local U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks (D-Bremerton) our highest award, the Mott Award, for national public service during our annual awards dinner in Washington, D.C. Previous winners of the award include Senator John McCain and President Jimmy Carter. In 1984 Rep. Dicks was responsible for a key addition the Clearwater area to the Washington Wilderness bill. Perhaps his biggest environmental achievement came in September, 2000, as Rep. Dicks wrote a landmark bill that created a new federal lands conservation trust, doubling the nation’s commitment to preserving threatened parklands and protecting wildlife over a six-year period.
In the Pacific Northwest, Rep. Dicks is renowned for his dedication and vision to restore wild salmon to Olympic National Park’s Elwha Valley, one of the largest restoration projects in the nation. Just last year, he helped authorize the addition of 800 acres to Mount Rainier National Park’s Carbon River Valley, the largest expansion of that park in more than 70 years. This past year Rep. Dicks led a successful effort in Congress to increase operations funding for all 388 parks, preventing the closure of visitor centers and cancellation of education programs this summerthe highest increase for operations in park service history.
