Locals Help Restore Elwha River Valley at Olympic National Park
NPCA’s own Josh Walter, working with Olympic National Park, is organizing volunteer work days at the Elwha River Valley Restoration Project. On our first work day in March, more than 15 volunteers braved the weather to help remove exotic plant species like Herb Robert from the two Elwha River campgrounds and areas around Glines Canyon Dam.
The Partnership for Elwha Restoration and Education (PERE), an informal coalition of agencies, educators, and community groups, is addressing the growing need for communication and coordination about the Elwha project. Dam removal is scheduled to begin in 2008, yet few park visitors and community members know much about Elwha, the second largest restoration project in the National Park Service. Through our volunteer work days, NPCA is helping link community members with this ambitious and exciting dam removal and salmon habitat restoration project.
NPCA’s volunteer work days are a fun way to restore native plants in the Elwha valley. Work days are planned through the fall of 2005. If you are interested in volunteering with NPCA on the Elwha River Restoration Project or interested in learning more about PERE, please contact Josh Walter at jwalter@npca.org or call 206.903.1444 x25.
