How You Can Help: Volunteer for the Parks

The Northwest Region's Finest

It's been said that rain is the lifeblood of the Northwest. Here in NPCA's Northwest Regional Office, volunteers are OUR lifeblood. We couldn't accomplish half of what we do without our amazing team of volunteers. As a matter of fact, since the Northwest Regional Office re-opened in spring 2003, volunteers have contributed over 5,000 hours to protecting national parks in our region. Our volunteers come from all over--Seattle, Olympia, Port Angeles, Tacoma, Vancouver, Portland, Ashland--and are involved in so many different ways in our regional efforts.

Volunteers have played key roles in helping determine and carry out our yearly program plans, like ensuring the Carbon River expansion at Mt. Rainier or restoring wild salmon to Olympic's Elwha River. During the summers of 2004-2006, NPCA volunteers were on the front lines in nine different Northwest national parks encouraging park visitors to take action for adequate park funding and other important park issues. Our fabulous crew of volunteers has also put in numerous hours with park work projects, like pulling non-native plants in the Elwha Valley and performing much-needed trail maintenance at Mt. Rainier.

At NPCA's Parks Information Center and Gallery in Seattle, volunteers greet our visitors and help them plan their trips to area national parks. More importantly, NPCA volunteers serve as advocates for parks and encourage visitors to take action to protect these special places. As one can imagine, volunteers also do an amazing amount of work "behind the scenes" in our office. They help get our newsletter out to members, maintain databases, coordinate action items, answer phones, and much more.

We aren't trying to change the world here, but we are trying to protect our beloved national parks for future generations. If you enjoy national parks and want to make a difference, we would love to hear from YOU!
