Northern Rockies: Grand Teton Program

Park Protection

The Grand Teton Field Office, based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, anchors the southern end of the Northern Rockies Region. The Field Office works to protect the outstanding Grand Teton National Park, including the remarkable Teton mountain range, magnificent Snake River corridor, and the incredible and diverse wildlife in the Grand Teton and Yellowstone region. The Field Office also works to enhance visitors’ experience and improve the relationship of Jackson Hole’s surrounding communities with Grand Teton National Park.

There are many external resource threats to Grand Teton National Park.  Some relate to grandfathered uses within the park such as the existence of a dam on Jackson Lake and an airport located at the base of the Teton Range.  The Grand Teton Field Office recently opposed a project to develop a hydropower project at the Jackson Lake Dam (read more).  Development on lands adjacent to the park can also impact park resources such as the currently proposed expansion of Grand Targhee ski area and resort located directly to the west of the park, and other developments within the Town and County that impact wildlife travel corridors.  The Grand Teton Field Office monitors these uses and works with both park management and elected officials to address and mitigate impacts.

The Grand Teton Office is also involved in many park planning processes and protection efforts that are important to the future of Grand Teton National Park.  We comment on formal processes and work closely with park managers on projects that could impact park resources.  Past planning projects have included proposals to rehabilitate and expand services at the Gros Ventre Campground, a management plan for Bison and Elk, and proposals from the Jackson Hole Airport to extend the lease on the airport land and expand the terminal, which is located entirely within Grand Teton National Park.
