North Fork Watershed Protection Act Would Protect Beauty and Viability of the Greater Crown of the Continent Without Infringing on Private Property Rights
Statement by Michael Jamison, Glacier Program Manager, National Parks Conservation Association
“It’s been three years since our Canadian neighbors agreed to protect the lands north of Glacier National Park from industrialization, and I can’t think of a better way to honor that anniversary than the introduction of this legislation. We Montanans shook hands on a good faith deal to protect the shared transboundary region, and this bill shows we’re honest about upholding our end of the bargain.
“During the past year, support for this legislation has come from some powerful places – cities, counties, Chambers of Commerce, and leaders of business and industry. Even major energy companies such as Chevron and ConocoPhillips have thrown their weight behind the bill. There is widespread understanding here that places such as Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake serve an indispensable role for the Crown of the Continent region – they are our ecological and economic headwaters, and we very much appreciate the efforts by Montana’s Congressional delegation to safeguard both our lifestyle and our livelihood.
“This bill – which does not cost taxpayers a dime, and preserves all private property rights – protects both our outdoor heritage and our economic future for generations to come. We join both our Montanan and Canadian neighbors in encouraging its swift passage.”
