National Parks Group Commends MGM Resorts for Plans to Build Rooftop Solar Facility
Statement by Lynn Davis, Nevada Senior Program Manager, National Parks Conservation Association
“The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) commends MGM Resorts for their plans to build a rooftop solar facility on top of one of the company’s convention centers in Las Vegas. Installing clean energy facilities on buildings and on vacated land near where energy is consumed, versus on environmentally sensitive public lands, is the way of the future.”
“MGM Resorts announced that the company will build a rooftop solar facility with power equivalent to the needs of 1,000 homes. Notably, the solar facility will be up and going next year, which demonstrates the ease in locating renewable facilities in urban environments. This announcement, coupled with recent news on aggressive rooftop solar initiatives in Los Angeles, marks a smart, in-my-backyard approach to solar development”
“NPCA has long advocated that solar energy offers our country promising opportunity for reducing reliance on coal-fired power plants. However, we have been dismayed to witness industrial-scale facilities proposed and built on sensitive public lands that stand to forever and negatively change the scenic vistas of our iconic national parks and threaten animal and plant species.”
