Riverside County Board of Supervisors Unanimously Supports California Desert Protection Act
Stament by NPCA California Desert Senior Program Manager David Lamfrom
BACKGROUND: On September 14, 2011, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in support of the California Desert Protection Act of 2011.
“Riverside County’s support for the California Desert Protection Act of 2011 demonstrates the county’s commitment to building their economy while protecting resident’s quality of life and recreation. The bill will position the California desert as a world-class destination for tourism, attracting hikers, bikers, climbers, photographers, wildlife watchers and four-wheel drivers to our communities and our protected lands.”
“Passage of this legislation will protect Riverside’s backyard treasures such as Joshua Tree National Park and the Whitewater River while designation of the Sand-to-Snow National Monument will recruit new recreational enthusiasts to both its scenic desert landscapes and the connected high country of the San Bernardino Mountains.”
“Nearly 3 million visitors come to California desert national parks alone (Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Mojave National Preserve) annually. This accounts for an estimated 82 million dollars in economic activity and nearly 1,000 jobs. The California Desert Protection Act of 2011 will increase that economic benefit and raise awareness of the unique and iconic landscapes and history of our desert.”
