National Parks Group Encouraged by Decision to Delay Construction of Proposed Coal-Fired Power Plant
WASHINGTON, DC—On September 8, 2010, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) announced an 18-24 month delay in the construction of its proposed Cypress Creek Power Station in Southeastern Virginia.
Statement by Joy Oakes, Mid-Atlantic Regional Director with the National Parks Conservation Association:
“We support Old Dominion Electric Cooperative's recent decision to delay construction in Surry County on what would be the largest coal-fired power plant in the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
“During this time, we encourage Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and the regulatory authorities involved to consider alternatives to this proposed plant that would avoid causing detrimental impacts on air quality and tourism to the numerous national historical parks and local communities in the area.”
