National Parks Conservation Association Praises House Subcommittee's Continued Investment in National Parks
Statement by NPCA Legislative Director Kristen Brengel
“The Interior Appropriations Subcommittee has taken another step toward fulfilling the federal commitment to restore our national parks in time for the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service.
“Thanks to the leadership of Chairman Norm Dicks, Ranking Member Mike Simpson, and other members of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, the bill approved by the subcommittee includes increased funding to operate and maintain the national parks and $25 million for the parks’ public-private partnership program.
“We’ll be looking to the Senate to provide the needed funds for the Park Service to buy high-priority land within park boundaries from willing sellers and prevent inappropriate development.
“With this investment, Congress can make a measurable impact in addressing the parks’ crumbling historic buildings and trails, protect wildlife and cultural treasures, and provide needed public education and services and science and research—all of which has been lacking for years in America’s national parks.”
