New Mount Rainier National Park Visitor Center Underscores Need for Continued Investment in National Parks
Statement by NPCA Northwest Regional Director Sean Smith
"The crowd gathered today at the opening celebration of the new Jackson Visitor Center at Mount Rainier National Park demonstrates the immense care and love that people have for our national parks. This show of support reminds us that we must resolve to continue our promise to preserve and protect these places for our children and grandchildren.
National parks generate tremendous value for our communities and our economy, and provide inspiring settings for treasured family memories. Our national parks are also a sound investment; for every federal dollar invested in national parks, at least four dollars in economic benefit are generated for state and local economies. And yet, every year, our national parks suffer from an operating shortfall of approximately $750 million, in addition to a massive multi-billion maintenance backlog.
Despite the tough economic times facing our nation, we must ensure that we continue to invest in the preservation of our parks. We are grateful to Rep. Norm Dicks and Rep. Dave Reichert for their continued efforts to secure the federal funding needed to protect our national heritage for our children and grandchildren."
