Washington, D.C. - The people directly affected by the September 11 disasters - the victims' families, the rescue workers, the survivors - have been touched by history in a direct and devastating way. So it is fitting that they be given life-long free access to the national parks, places that house not only America's most beautiful scenery but also embody our history as a people seeking liberty.

From Independence Hall to the Statue of Liberty, from Thomas Jefferson's home to the Frederick Douglass house, national parks represent our best impulses as we struggle to achieve a human and national ideal of freedom for all from want and fear. What better way to honor the people so hard hit on September 11 than by giving them an open door to the parks that honor so many other Americans who served the cause of liberty?
