Nomination of Fran Mainella as National Park Service Director
Washington, D.C. - We look forward to working with Fran Mainella, nominated today by President Bush to head the National Park Service. We are impressed with her years of experience with Florida state parks and believe she is ready to meet the formidable challenge of managing the most extensive and comprehensive system of natural and cultural resources in the world.
Among the first tests of her abilities and of her commitment to protecting the essential resources of national parks will be her support for bans on snowmobile and Jet Ski use in the national parks and for regulation of off-road vehicles in Big Cypress National Preserve, decisions on which the Bush Administration may be wavering. She also must be ready to continue the Park Service's role as a strong advocate for restoring the Everglades' natural system.
Last week, the National Parks Conservation Association issued a report card giving the Bush Administration a "D" grade for its national parks program. We want to work with Fran Mainella to raise that grade to an "A" and hope she proves to be the person who can do it.
