NPCA Comments on Bush's Naming of Interior Secretary Nominee

Washington, D.C. - "We are approaching with caution President-elect George W. Bush's nomination of former Colorado attorney general Gale Norton for secretary of the Interior," says Thomas Kiernan, president of the National Parks Conservation Association. "Her history includes assignment as a fellow with the Political Economy Research Center think tank, which has taken disturbing environmental positions such as outlining methods for selling off national parks.

"However, George Bush has praised Norton as an individual who seeks consensus rather than unbending adherence to an ideology. With this comment in mind, we are eager to work with her to accomplish President-elect Bush's campaign promise for $4.9 billion in the national parks budget to provide stronger protection for park resources and to help remedy backlogged repair work. Gale Norton will be key to moving this promise to the American people through Congress."
